Chieftains Host Annual Awards Bash

THE AWARD WINNERS: Eamon O’Keeffe, Barry Sinclair, Julia Rigaux, Carol Ann Farrelly, Brendan O’Hara, Adrian Lagan, (not pictured) Sinead Leacy and Tom McAroe.

CALGARY – The Calgary Chieftains held their annual awards night recently to celebrate 2009 achievements.

Held in the grand hall of the Irish Cultural Society which was kindly donated, members gathered to acknowledge the achievements of the players and recognize the Club Person of the Year.

The Chieftains had Carol Ann Farrelly, Sinead Leacy (Ladies), Adrian Lagan, Tom McAroe and Barry Sinclair (Men) named to the 2009 Ledcor Western Division All Stars.

The Club commemorated their achievement by issuing each player with a plaque and a framed copy of the All-Star team.

Next, the club recognized the individuals who stood out for the Men’s and Ladies teams, awarding trophies for the Most Improved Player and the M.V.P. of each of the teams.

Eamon O’Keeffe was awarded the Most Improved Player for the Men’s team after returning from a knee injury in 2008. His play in the heart of the defence was exemplary.

The MVP for the men went to Brendan O’Hara. The play of this midfield stalwart from Armagh left no doubt who the player of the year was for the Chieftains.

Julia Rigaux earned the Most Improved Player for the Ladies’ Team. Julia, a proud Canadian, is new to Gaelic football, and showed immense potential on the pitch.

The Ladies’ M.V.P., picking up her second award on the night, was Carol Ann Farrelly. Carol Ann, or Christmas as she is affectionately known, is an extremely talented footballer, singer, actor or anything else she puts her mind to.

Julia and Christmas celebrated by singing a duet, the name of the song will remain unpublished; as will its content.

The Chieftains tradition is to have the attending members vote for the Club Person of the Year.

The award went to Eamon O’Keeffe. He is a true Chieftain and always available to help the Club or get the ball rolling. It is a testament to Eamon’s energy, that he also remains one of their top players.

A fine banquet was served by A Certain Flair Catering and DJ Brian Mack, who also has a show on Country 105, and had the Chieftains dancing all through the night.

The awards night is just the start of the events and tournaments that the club will be hosting or participating in.
