VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Irish Sporting and Social Club travelled to San Francisco to compete in the Smithwicks Gaelic Football and Hurling 7's tournament on the May long weekend.

The 28 degree heat that weekend in San Fran brought out a great number of teams and supporters to the GAA field in Treasure Island.

The new impressive GAA field was officially opened by President Mary McAleese in December 2008 and this tournament in which Vancouver had the privilege of playing was the first to be played in the new grounds.

Vancouver Harps men's football team got off a winning start and were narrowly beaten in extra time of the senior semi-final by the Sons of Ulster.

Likewise, the ladies football team did exceptionally well, considering they travelled enough numbers to field a team, narrowly losing out to the eventual winners Saoirse Fog in the semi-final.

The Vancouver hurlers displayed some superb hurling throughout the day but alas never made it to the final stages of the tournament.

The post-tournament gathering and presentations were held in the 32 Counties bar in San Francisco. A fun weekend was had by all.

Next date for the diary is the Vancouver-hosted tournament which will be held in Capilano Rugby fields on June 27 from 11 AM.

Finals will be played on June 28. Ladies and gents teams will travel from Seattle, Calgary, and Edmonton to contest in the first leg of the Western Division championship.

This weekend always proves to be a great one with several of the top Gaelic footballers in North America competing. All support is welcome.

New members are always welcome to the ISSC, for more information, e-mail: info@isscvancouver.com or visit: www.isscvancouver.comfor information on upcoming events.
