Coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the birth of national poet, Robert Burns, Homecoming Scotland will also focus on some of key iconic products such as golf and whisky, as well as being the home of many of your ancestors.
Further information about the year-long celebration will be announced soon, but in the meantime please visit www.homecomingscotland.com.
The Gathering 2009
Taking place in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh on July 25 and 26, 2009, The Gathering will be an international clan gathering and the largest highland games ever held in Scotland - one of the key events of Homecoming Scotland 2009.
It is estimated that there will be over 80 clan tents, with around 7,500 clan and Scottish association members from around the world. The Highland Games will attract a further 30,000 people over the two days, showcasing competitors from all disciplines that constitute a traditional Highland Games including piping, dancing, and heavy athletics.
A special clan ceremony, taking the form of a clan parade on the Royal Mile, will culminate in a unique clan pageant on the magnificent esplanade of Edinburgh Castle. For more information please visit www.thegathering2009.com.
New Research Centre for Scottish Borders
After several years of planning and development, the Scottish Borders recently opened a new centre for researching family history and the culture and heritage of the Borders.
The Heritage Hub in Hawick, whose building dates from 1888, has now been sympathetically transformed into a state-of-the-art archive and local and family history centre for the Borders and beyond.
Archives bringing culture, heritage and everyday life from the past alive have been brought together, catalogued and made available to everyone.
Heritage Hub replaces the former archive and local history centre at St Mary's Mill in Selkirk. For more information on the centre, call (011) 44-1450-360699 or e-mail: archives@scotborders.gov.uk.
