Patagonia Evening at the Cambrian Hall

VANCOUVER – The Reflections on Patagonia evening held at the Cambrian Hall on June 10 was well attended and proved to be both interesting and informative.

The Welsh language film Poncho Mamgu, with Spanish subtitles, showed some of the challenges faced by the early Welsh settlers in the valley of the Chubut in Patagonia through the eyes of a young girl, with a storyline that carried forward to the present day.

The two presenters, Neville Thomas and Victor Griffiths, provided non-Welsh or Spanish speakers with an English printed guide to the storyline. The two also provided additional information and photographs of present-day life in the Welsh settlement. Victor grew up in Patagonia, while Neville and his wife Kathy were recent visitors.

Welsh Society members plan to carry on the Patagonian theme with a summer barbecue for members and guests. The main menu item will be a lamb roasted by Victor Griffiths in the way it is traditionally cooked in Patagonia. The date and location of the barbecue will be announced soon. For details, see: www.welshsociety.com.
