VANCOUVER – When the popular Penny Lane Pub at 41st and Main Street in Vancouver, closed its doors earlier this year, it left a huge void for its many patrons.
Many of those patrons will be happy to know that some of those familiar faces from the Penny Lane can be found at a new location a little further along Main Street.
Russ Stratton, the friendly bartender, along with Spiros the chef, and server Serenity Turner can now be found at their new residence called Chaise Lounge, located at 4444 Main Street.
Colleen and I dropped in to the new location after we finished distributing the May issue of The Celtic Connection for a bite to eat and to have a look at the new establishment.
As we drove along Main Street, we noticed the small outdoor patio at Chaise with patrons and their dogs enjoying one of our few nice sunny days. Water is supplied in dishes for the dogs, which we agreed was a nice touch.
The interior at Chaise has a circular bar as you walk in the door with modern art on the walls. As you walk past the bar, there is a smaller room with a view of Main Street and the patio area. The lounge is small and welcoming with a seating capacity for 55 patrons.
I spoke with Serenity Turner and asked her about the new business which opened in April.
She said, “Russ and Spiros really want to establish a local neighbourhood business and create ties with the community.
“We’re really going to be pushing our lunches and brunches as a place where people can come and stop by and have a well-made meal that is prepared fast, so it’s not interrupting the flow of their day.
“Our focus is to move away from the bar scene that was the Penny Lane and move into the restaurant scene and establish a presence on Main Street.
“So far, we’ve had a lot of positive feedback. More people are starting to trickle in and day by day our sales are going up.
“We’re going to have a dedicated brunch menu and will be serving brunch from 9 AM until 1 PM during the week and on the weekend from 9 AM to 3 PM.”
The Chaise Lounge offers a wide selection of omelettes, frittatas, eggs benny and other traditional egg dishes, bacon and eggs, pancakes and French toast.
“There are not a lot of breakfast establishments in this neighbourhood, so we are really hoping to capitalize on that,” said Serenity.
“For dinner, we are focussing on more simple comfort food such as, roast chicken, prime ribs, steaks, catch of the day with roast potatoes and fresh grilled vegetables. The emphasis will be on local fresh food that will be interesting but yet still simple. We also have a daily food special.
“Our burgers are also very popular. Spiros, makes house-made meat patties with his own secret spices and they are really delicious. So many places use frozen patties, but he does it all fresh.”
Colleen and I had the fish and chips and we remarked on how light the batter was and not at all overwhelming to the fish. Serenity told us that it was a light beer batter that gave the fish that light and fluffy taste.
Chaise Lounge offers good wholesome comfort food, reasonable prices, welcoming atmosphere and a great place to watch the World Cup!
