Long-term president Jeff Owen honoured by Welsh Society
 CURRENT president of the Vancouver Welsh Society John Morris presented an appreciation award to Jeff Owen.

VANCOUVER – Long-serving member Jeff Owen has been recognized by the Vancouver Welsh Society for his 11 years service as president of the Society. Jeff was presented with a gift by current president, John Morris, at the St. David’s Day Dinner held on February 27.
In a letter published in the Society’s newsletter, the Cambrian News, Jeff thanked the membership for the honour and gave special thanks to his wife Gaynor. He maintains that without Gaynor’s support and encouragement his years of service would not have been possible. Jeff and Gaynor are Life Members of the Welsh Society.
According to many Welsh Society members, especially those who served with him, Jeff took an expansive view of his duties as president. He not only carried out his administrative duties as president but also contributed many hours and expertise in carrying out repairs and maintenance at the Cambrian Hall.
President John Morris, who served as the Society’s treasurer under Jeff, says of him, “His manner was to lead by example rather than words. He had a patient approach and his comments were usually well thought out and moderate in tone.”
Long-time Society secretary and current building committee chair Lynn Owens-Whalen commented on Jeff’s many contributions saying, “Jeff’s commitment to the maintenance of the Cambrian Hall for many, many years is legendary. He spent hours building, repairing, upgrading and guiding several major structural projects, often at very short notice.”
Jeff and Gaynor were instrumental in organizing and promoting social events at the Cambrian Hall. They also hosted a much-appreciated annual summer barbecue for Welsh Society members at their home in Richmond.
In making the presentation, John Morris said that the recognition was long overdue and well-deserved as Jeff Owen is the Welsh Society’s longest-serving president. Following the presentation, Jeff received a standing ovation from the audience.
