PRINCE GEORGE – Garrett Fedorkiw and Eoin Foley, the co-owners of the new Nancy O's restaurant in Prince George, both have Irish heritage as their parents come from Wexford and Dublin.
In planning their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations they decided to avoid the commercial route serving green beer, and followed a more traditional path with fine Irish ales and stouts along with good food and hospitality.
Entertainment was due to begin at 7 PM but the doors were bursting by 6 PM. When the session musicians arrived they found the room filled with eager patrons waiting for the ceol agus craic.
Out of Alba’s Jim and Margaret Coyle, Alan O’Reilly, Jim Sayle, and fiddler Julie O’Reilly from Clan Cara, and Tom Young were amazed to see the number of people, young and not-so-young wanting to celebrate Paddy's Day.
With the scene set for maximum participation (no microphones or televisions), the musicians played to a crowd wanting more, and they rose to the occasion by playing lively traditional music and sing-a-longs.
It was a psycho ceili! The musicians finally got a break when the local award-winning pipers walked in led by Marvin Hawke. The four pipers and one drummer played The Wearing of the Green and other Irish tunes to the delight of the crowd.
This little restaurant is certainly making waves in Prince George. We’ve been waiting a long time for something like it! Be sure to stop in if you’re passing by.
Nancy O’s is located at 1261 3rd Avenue in Prince George, B.C. For more information, call (250) 562-8066 or visit them online at: www.nancyos.ca.
