Exciting secret revealed for new Mahony and Sons

VANCOUVER – Each month after the distribution of The Celtic Connection, Colleen and I will generally drop into one of our local establishments for some lunch and refreshment.

After the busy March issue, we dropped into Mahony and Sons Public House which is located near the University of British Columbia. As you would expect with its close proximity to the university, the pub draws a lot of students and professors along with local residents.

We met up with general manger Chris Mahony who let us in on a big secret that they’re really excited about.

“We’re in the process of opening a new Mahony and Sons establishment down at the waterfront at the new Trade and Convention Centre,” said Chris. “We’re planning on a grand opening date sometime in the early fall.”

With 10 siblings in the Mahony family, looking for staff for the new location or indeed for many more pubs, shouldn’t be a big concern.

Out at UBC, as soon as weather permits, Mahonys open their outdoor patio which is one of the largest in the area and a favourite hangout with seating for 150.

You can always be assured of good food at Mahony and Sons. They are currently in the process of changing some items on the menu but the favourite core items will remain.

After Colleen and I perused the extensive menu and made our decisions, I settled on the back bacon and cheddar burger. The addition of the back bacon really takes the burger to new heights.

Colleen decided on the crispy chicken wrap and salad, which she thoroughly enjoyed. For dessert, we shared a warm apple pie with caramel drizzle and ice-cream. It was yummy.

Throughout the Olympics many of the trials took place at UBC Thunderbird Arena, which is located close to Mahonys.

Chris said, “With so much of the Olympics taking place at Thunderbird Arena, we had people here from around the world.

“The pub was busy all the time and it was a lot of fun hosting the celebrations. The exposure certainly helped to showcase Mahony and Sons Pub to the world.”

Mahony and Sons will continue showing all the GAA games again this year and, of course, the World Cup in South Africa this June.

Chris laughed and said, “Ireland won’t be in the World Cup, but the next best team will be there......Australia.” The Mahony clan is originally from Down Under.

The pub features entertainment on the weekend with Johnny Leroux on Friday night and Evan Kennedy plays on Thursday and Saturday nights. Stay tuned to The Celtic Connection for more information about the opening date for the new Mahony and Sons Public House.

Mahony and Sons Public House is located at 5990 University Boulevard, across from the War Memorial Gym at UBC. For more information, call (604) 827-4444, or visit: www.mahonyandsons.com.
