N. VANCOUVER – Saint Patrick’s Day dawned bright and sunny and Maura and I decided to take a drive to North Vancouver.
Each St. Patrick’s Day, The Celtic Connection will generally visit some of the Celtic establishments. This year, we dropped in to the famous Cheshire Cheese Restaurant, located on the waterfront on the second level of the Lonsdale Quay Market.
We were greeted by Luisa Gaspar, the always friendly and welcoming general manager, who seated us at a table that afforded a lovely view of the Burrard Inlet.
There is a patio just outside overlooking the water, so guests have a choice of either sitting inside or out, either way there is still a magnificent view.
Maura and I both remarked that it was probably the first St. Patrick’s Day that we were both able to sit down together and enjoy a lovely leisurely lunch.
During the day and evening on St. Patrick’s, the Cheshire Cheese featured the Eire Born Irish Dancers and live music by The Irish Wakers.
The Cheshire Cheese is a British-style pub and restaurant, offering casual waterfront dining and specializing in seafood and traditional British fare.
There is a lunch and dinner menu and a brunch on Saturday, Sunday and holidays until 2 PM. The bar menu offers everything from martinis, wines, local and premium beer and ciders, to England’s finest ales.
While we were there, one of the Cheshire Cheese regulars dropped by with a book he was reading about King Arthur. He wanted to show Luisa a reference about an ancient Cheshire Cheese Pub.
The passage read that one day King Arthur was feeling very low (of course, he had plenty to feel low about with Lancelot and Guinevere running off), and Merlin suggested that he visit the Cheshire Cheese Pub for some good food and refreshment to lift his spirits and make him feel better. So, it would appear that the benefits of a visit to the Cheshire Cheese goes way back into the mists of legend.
Maura and I also benefited from our visit to the Cheshire Cheese and after some good food, refreshment and lively conversation, we were also energized for the day.
If you’re planning to take mom to the Cheshire Cheese for a delicious lunch or dinner on Mother’s Day, reservations are well advised.
The Cheshire Cheese is located on the second floor at Lonsdale Quay Market in North Vancouver. For reservations, call (604) 987-3322, or visit: www.lonsdalequay.com.
