John Morris Re-Elected as President of Vancouver Welsh Society for Another Year

JOHN MORRIS

By EIFION WILLIAMS

John Morris was re-elected president of the Vancouver Welsh Society at its annual general meeting in December.

Lynn Owens-Whalen will continue as vice-president while Jane Byrne will also remain on the executive as immediate past president.

Gaynor Evans was elected treasurer and newcomer Elizabeth Williams-Wallace was elected secretary. Another newcomer, Mark Jones, will assume the responsibility of membership secretary.

Rounding off the executive will be members-at-large Heather Davies, Mary Lewis, Gethin Owen, Alcwyn Rogers and Eifion Williams.

The year 2009 saw an increase in social activities at the Cambrian Hall, largely due to the efforts of chair Gillian Rogers and members of the social committee.

The year ended with some very successful and well-attended Christmas events – a mulled wine evening on December 8, a carol service on December 13, followed by a children’s Christmas party in the afternoon.

This year’s annual Christmas dinner on December 18 also welcomed several members of Vancouver’s Royal St. George Society.

The Society has also been fortunate over the past year in having members who contributed their time and effort at a monthly work day to carry out repairs and maintenance at the Cambrian Hall, thus helping reduce the increasing costs of maintaining the building. Building Committee Chair Lynn Owens-Whalen has spearheaded these efforts.

The Society is now looking forward to events planned for the coming months. A St. Dwynwen’s Day celebration was held on January 29. The annual St. David’s Day dinner will be held on February 27.

On March 1, the day on which St. David’s Day actually falls, there will be a traditional celebration in the Red Dragon with refreshments to include the traditional cawl cennin (leek soup).

Among other activities planned for the near future are a pub quiz night, an event that has proved popular in the past, and the annual spring sale in April. Details on all Welsh Society activities can be found on the Society’s website www.welshsociety.com.
