Vancouver Police Pipe Band to Attend Swiss Tattoo

By JIM MCWILLIAMS

VANCOUVER – The Vancouver Police Pipe Band has accepted an invitation to perform in the Basel Tattoo 2010.

The band, which had to turn down previous invitations due to commitments abroad and at home, has at last been able to accept the invitation to take part next July in the second biggest tattoo in Europe.

Basel will be a highlight of another busy year which starts with the band's own Robbie Burns Night followed by several Olympic appearances.

The past year saw the band perform in a total of 75 events. Besides all the usual activities – Robbie Burns Night, The National Police Memorial Day, Remembrance Day, and the many parades – Chinese New Year parade, the Vaisakhi parade, the Celtic Week parade, the Vancouver Pride parade, and the Santa Claus parade, the band found time to compete in local Highland Games and spend a week touring central Portugal.

In Portugal the band did a series of parades and stage performances. Recently the Vancouver Police Pipe Band was called upon to take part in more sombre ceremonials, including the funeral service for Jack Poole who had spearheaded Canada's bid for the Winter Olympics, and the memorial service in Tacoma, Washington for the four fallen Lakewood police officers.

“It has been a busy year,” commented Pipe Major Cal Davis, “but it hasn't kept prospective members from showing up. Hardly a week goes by without a new player turning up at band practice looking to join. It is really exciting to see the band growing in numbers and quality. Basel will be another great opportunity for us.”
