VANCOUVER – The eighth annual Danny Burns Memorial, Feed the Hungry took place on December 6 at The Wolf and Hound on West Broadway.

The Wolf and Hound was a hive of activity and music when I arrived and soon afterwards, it was standing room only right to the door.

It was wonderful to meet old friends who turned out on the night and to see the great support from the community for this worthy cause.

It just keeps growing year-after-year and all proceeds go to the Union Gospel Mission.

There was a fantastic line-up of live Celtic entertainment, and the musicians who participated gave their time and energy for free.

With the onset of cold weather, the recession and high unemployment, the Union Gospel Mission is in need more than ever of funds to feed the city’s less fortunate this Christmas.

Michael Viens of the group Blackthorn arranges all the entertainment and is also the master of ceremonies for the evening. He was kept very busy making sure bands went on at their allotted time and pulling tickets for the door prizes.

Groups at the event included: the Irish Wakers; Ballyhooley; the BC Regiment Irish Pipes and Drums; Copper Sky; Rogues n’ Tinkers; Blackthorn; The Streels; and Paddy Chessell.

Viens reported that a record breaking $5,060 was raised for the Union Gospel Mission this year.

Congratulations to Michael Viens for all his hard work. Special thanks to all the Celtic groups who entertained; and also to the community who turned out to support the event. All of you worked together to make this year the best Feed The Hungry fundraiser to date.
