Bringing Vancouver Greetings to the Lord Provost of Edinburgh

VANCOUVER - Long time friends of The Celtic Connection, David Lunny and his wife Maureen Baird, both past presidents of the St. Andrew's and Caledonian Society of the City of Vancouver, have occasionally had the pleasure of hosting or sponsoring welcoming events on a modest scale for visiting dignitaries from Scotland.

A year or so ago, they hosted a small cocktail reception for George Reid, who was the Presiding Officer (Speaker) of the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. Most recently, they provided accommodation for columnist Harry McGrath and his colleague Graeme Murdoch of Cultural Connect Scotland at Drumkeeran House, their Celtic lodge in Pemberton, B.C.

On August 23, thanks to the good offices of George Reid and Harry McGrath, their hospitality was reciprocated during their Homecoming Year visit to Scotland (after a wonderful week in Ireland).

David and Maureen were the guests of honour at a dinner with the Right Honourable George Grubb, Lord Provost of Edinburgh. This was followed by Royal Box seating at a marvellous performance of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo on a beautiful moonlit evening at the castle.

As Edinburgh is a sister city to Vancouver, the event provided a splendid opportunity to extend to the Lord Provost and to the citizens of Edinburgh greetings from Mayor Gregor Robertson and the citizens of Vancouver, in the form of a letter and gift, in this pre-Olympic year.

In turn, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh entrusted David and Maureen with an official gift to take back to the Mayor of Vancouver.
