Canmore Highland Games: Another Huge Success

CANMORE, Alberta - Canmore Highland Games 2009 a huge success...a crowd of almost 5,000 descended on Canmore on September 6 to celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture and heritage.

Competitors numbered around 250 Highland dancers, 14 pipe bands and around 12 heavy sportsmen.

An unexpected happening was a stray sheep who took a tour of the festival tent during the sheepdog demonstrations.

There was a black powder shoot by the historical 78th Fraser Highlanders, traditional foods like black pudding and haggis, clan tents, Celtic vendors from across the country and non-stop entertainment and fun from 8 AM to 11 PM.

A surprise visit was made by a media writer/photographer team from Scotland - Harry McGrath and Graeme Murdoch from Cultural Connect Scotland (www.culturalconnectscotland.com).

They said they have attended many Highland Games but found Canmore to be one of the best they had ever seen!

The Taste of Culture event (private Scotch-tasting) raised lots of glasses (and funds) towards both the Canadian Friends of Scotland (www.canadascotland.com) and the Three Sisters Scottish Festival Society (www.canmorehighlandgames.com).

On-hand were long-time supporters Ed McNally and his wife of Big Rock Brewery fame. From further abroad, the Honorable Alexander Bruce, son of Lord Elgin of Scotland, hosted the scotch tasting sessions.

Next year the Canmore Highland Games will hold their 20th annual event on September 5. Don't miss it! For more information, visit: www.canmorehighlandgames.com.
