VANCOUVER - Proceeds from the sale of the 2008 Irish Women's Network calendar were welcomed by charities in Canada and Zambia last month.

Over $9,000 raised from sales of the charity calendar were recently donated to the Celtic Society of Canada in Vancouver and Our Lady's Hospice in Lusaka, Zambia.

Cork-born Sr. Kay O'Neill, of the Franciscan Missionaries of The Divine Motherhood who works with the hospice in Lusaka, writes on the use of the funding saying, "The money will be used for running costs - food, fuel, medicine and maintenance of the hospice.

"We do not get gGovernment funding here, so (we) depend on any donations we can get to keep the place going."

While the hospice receives some funding for its outpatient clinic which currently serves over 4,400 patients that attend for ARV (antiretroviral) therapy, it receives nothing for its inpatients, which currently number about 30 people.

All care costs for inpatients, including medicines and salaries for staff must be fundraised. The website for the clinic can be viewed at www.ourladyshospice.org.

The IWN is honoured to be able to support the work of both worthy charities and delighted that one of their calendars will shortly arrive in Lusaka.

We wish to thank all the women that took part in the calendar and all our sponsors - without them, the donation to these great causes would not have been possible - thank you!
