Donors and Volunteers Contribute to Vancouver Welsh Society Events

WELSH businessman Gren Thomas presented Welsh Society President Jane Byrne with a cheque for $6,000 to cover costs related to the Welsh centennial celebrations.

VANCOUVER - The rousing success of the Welsh Society's Centenary celebrations in November was largely due to the financial support provided by West Vancouver businessman Gren Thomas.

Gren had generously agreed to cover all promotional and preparation costs, thus guaranteeing the success of the celebrations and enabling the Society to present attractive, high quality events.

Last month at his Red Lion Inn in West Vancouver, Gren presented Welsh Society President Jane Byrne with a cheque for $6,000 to help cover the Society's costs.

The expenses for popular Welsh tenor and conductor Eifion Thomas, who participated in the Centenary Concert and conducted the Gymanfa Ganu, were covered by Lyn and Wilf Owens-Whalen and Phyllis and Ken Owens.

The Society has expressed its gratitude to these generous donors and to all those who contributed in any way to the success of the Centenary events.

Gaynor Evans, who has served as the Welsh Society's treasurer for several years, is almost constantly busy organizing Society events. She was heavily involved with the planning for the Centenary celebrations and also with the Society's Christmas events.

Thanks largely to Gaynor, the annual Christmas dinner was very successful despite the inclement weather and a lot of illness among members.

As she has done for many years, Gaynor also organized the annual children's Christmas party, which was again successful as shown by the smiles on the little ones' faces. Gaynor is now busy organizing the St. David's Day Dinner scheduled for March 1 at the Cambrian Hall.

Gaynor's efforts on behalf of the Society are greatly appreciated by the members. With an aging and declining membership over the last few years, it becomes increasingly difficult for the Welsh Society to fill executive positions and secure volunteers for various events. Elections for a new Executive will be held at a general meeting on February 13 in the Cambrian Hall, 7:30 PM. All members are urged to attend.

A recent loss to the Society was the resignation due to ill-health of Ann Roberts as organizer of the monthly bilingual church service, a position she has held for 18 years.

Over the years, Ann has served the Society in many capacities, including those of president and secretary. Her informative and frequently entertaining talks at the monthly services were much appreciated by the congregation, many of them regular attendees and participants in the services.

At the Welsh Society's last general meeting, members expressed their gratitude to Ann for organizing the monthly services over many years. Society member John Cann has agreed to organize the services from now on.
