Robert Goodrick Carries On a Great Tradition in Langley

TROBERT GOODRICK

By CATHOLINE BUTLER

LANGLEY - Robert Goodrick, formerly of the British Butcher Shoppe in North Vancouver, is alive and well and plying his trade at P & G Sausage in Langley.

I recently dropped in to P & G Sausage to say hello to Robert and catch-up on all the news. Robert is an old friend of The Celtic Connection and has been for the past 17 years. We first met him when he opened his butcher shop in Kerrisdale.

Robert laughed and said, "you know what? I've basically gone back to basics and I'm doing what I was doing originally at the butcher shop in Kerrisdale. Back to making the bacon, sausages, hams, black and white pudding, Cornish pasties and all the traditional English meat pies...just like I used to make them.

"I bring in all my spices from England to ensure a traditional taste to my products. When I was in Kerrisdale that was a fun business and that's what I'm doing now... having fun doing what I like best. You can't go wrong with basics and quality."

At this time of year, with the holiday season upon us, our thoughts turn to all the holiday treats and special dishes that have been a tradition in our homes since we were children. Christmas or New Year's just wouldn't be the same without them.

"I have just made up my special limited edition mince meat for Christmas," Goodrick said, "I make my recipe up the way that I was taught in England. It's the same recipe that has been in my family for a long time. It's a recipe that's probably about 200 years old.

"I have also found that there is a demand for cottage rolls, Scotch eggs, pork loin roast, crown roast of pork and turkey rolls, especially at this holiday season. But, these items take time to do, so customers would need to order these specialties in advance.

"Also, if people want haggis for the holidays, then they need to place their orders now. I brought my recipe for haggis from England and it was originally from Glasgow. The recipe has been tweaked slightly and I've been told that it's the best in the Lower Mainland."

P & G Sausage is a traditional European style butcher shop. The original owners were German and the present owners are of German heritage and have continued the Old Country style of providing the highest quality product at the most reasonable prices.

They specialize in over 70 different meat products and do not use MSG or artificial preservatives in their products. They also carry a lot of imported German sweets, cookies, candies, Stollen, and their sausage is to die for.

There is a very friendly atmosphere at P & G Sausage and a very definite European flavour to the shop, even the wallpaper is cheery. The shelves are packed with beautifully tinned and packaged treats and delicious Old Country aromas envelop your senses.

With Robert Goodrick providing all the traditional English product and having a fun time doing it, it will be one-stop shopping at P & G Sausage for all your European specialties.
