Coast String Fiddler Association Dedicated to promoting trad fiddle music

The Coast String Fiddler Association, a non-profit group committed to promoting traditional fiddle music, is celebrating its 10th anniversary of providing Celtic music camp to ages six to 86 in a non-competitive family atmosphere.

The Sunshine Coast School of Celtic Music kicks off a week of instruction, workshops, sessions and performance July 5-9 in beautiful Roberts Creek, B.C. located on the Sunshine Coast, a 40 minute ferry ride from Vancouver.

The Coast String Fiddler Association, a non-profit group committed to promoting traditional fiddle music, is celebrating its 10th anniversary of providing Celtic music camp to ages six to 86 in a non-competitive family atmosphere.

The summer camp has grown to over 200 participants and 16 world-class instructors from Canada, the U.S. and the UK. The music camp has played a key role in developing repertoire which has been based on the sharing of tunes, mainly through the aural tradition.

A key feature is to provide opportunities for people to play together by offering classes in accompaniment instruments including guitar, piano and cello, led by accomplished instructors with creative techniques to develop this important skill.

Over the years a “trad band” for advanced musicians ages 15-25 years, has become popular, using traditional repertoire in the modern big band setting such as Scottish groups the ‘Unusual Suspects’ and ‘Ceol Mor’.

This will be led by Iain Fraser and Harris Playfair of Scotland. Mairi Campbell, a music director for a community folk choir based in Edinburgh, will be sharing Scots song in the folk choir – a rich tradition, from the glorious melodies of Robert Burns to old and new ballads which deeply express events and feelings of those times.

The Coast String Fiddler Association operates the Coast String Fiddlers, a traditional music group for youth, who are excited to be fundraising to attend the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Aberdeen July 28 to August 7.

Participants are encouraged to avoid disappointment by registering by the early bird date of April 30. For details, see www.coaststringfiddlers.com or call Ann Law at (604) 886-4768.
