 ANTHONY KEARNS

Irish tenor Anthony Kearns will perform in Delta B.C. on May 7, at the South Delta Baptist Church.
Deeply honoured to present the music of his homeland around the globe, he includes an all-encompassing, dynamic repertoire spanning Ireland to Broadway, Lanza to McCormack, Viennese romance to Italian classics, singing music for every taste at every concert.
Considered Ireland’s finest tenor, Anthony recorded with the most celebrated talent in Ireland at the Dublin National Concert Hall’s Silver Jubilee honouring Ireland’s finest entertainers.
In addition, on March 28 this year, the Irish Music Association presented him with the Irish Music Award for Best Irish Tenor in Ireland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union.
Anthony’s roots lie in the old music of Ireland called sean nós. Blessed with the natural lilt necessary to sing this mystical music referred to as ‘shut eye songs’ in Ireland, Anthony won many All-Ireland singing competitions in this field and thrives on bringing the music of home to the world.
On The Irish Tenors newest release Ireland, Anthony recorded a “modern day” sean nós piece written by Brendan Graham, called Knocknashee, a hauntingly beautiful song.
Anthony is a frequent performer in the world’s most prestigious venues from Carnegie Hall to the Hollywood Bowl to the Sydney [Australia] Opera House with The Irish Tenors, who tour three times annually.
He also has a busy international solo career which includes countless concerts all over the world, always including many benefits for good causes.
In December in Washington D.C. Anthony was introduced by the Honorable Michael Collins, the Irish Ambassador to the U.S., at a concert benefiting the Consortium of Catholic Academies.
Said Kearns, “Times are tough across the globe. At the end of the day, it’s only a couple of hours, just get out and do it. Put your shoulder to the wheel and make it happen. It can only do you good.”
Kearns also has a thriving opera career, with his most recent opera work including Faust for Opera Ireland, Romeo for the Naples [Florida] Opera Company, and Don Jose for a Glasthule [Ireland] Opera Company June presentation of Carmen.
Kearns was in Prague in February to star in a new PBS venture: Halleluiah Broadway, which will air coast to coast in America this fall. His co-stars in this production are Rodrick Dixon, Alfreda Burke, and Linda Eder.
Hailing from County Wexford in Ireland, the same county which boasts the Kennedy clan, Anthony sang at a recent memorial in New Ross, Co. Wexford for the late President John F. Kennedy. In attendance was his sister, Jean Kennedy Smith who commented, “I have never heard a better Irish tenor voice.”
Fiercely proud of his heritage, one of his ancestors, Father Mogue Kearns, fought with Father Murphy in the 1798 rebellion, memorialized in the song Boolavogue Kearns recorded on the very first Irish Tenors CD.
