The Rogue - The Roots Music Series That Could

It's a very busy month at The Rogue, and Celtic music fans will also be excited at the prospect of seeing Tim O'Brien at St. James Hall on November 13.

This award winning bluegrass performer has made two CDs of music inspired by visits to his ancestral home in Ulster, as well as countless sparkling CDs of bluegrass and contemporary Americana.

He is an exceptional singer, fiddler, mandolinist, and guitarist – equally at home in Celtic, Old Time, bluegrass and acoustic song.

His latest CD, Chameleon, also demonstrates the quality of his songwriting skills, covering topics as diverse as the economy, unrequited love, horse racing, and the inconvenience of cell phones!

He will be joined by Nova Scotia banjo playing songwriter Chris ‘Old Man’ Luedecke, with whom he is recording a CD at Vancouver's Black Hen studios.

JUNO AWARD winners The McDades continue to garner rave reviews wherever they perform.

Another Celtic treat in store on November 19 is the Juno winning Celtic/Jazz combo The McDades.

Fiddler Shannon Johnson is joined by her brothers Solon and Jeremiah McDade, percussionist Francois Taillefer and a guitarist to present their unique musical hybrid.

Their latest CD, Bloom, won a Juno a couple of years ago and the band – whose members divide their time between tours in Quebec and their homeland of Alberta – continue to garner rave reviews wherever they perform.

The diverse nature of the Rogue Folk series also sees the return of Prairie songwriter Connie Kaldor – with a hot new CD and a fine band on November 10.

Versatile blues/rockabilly/roots guitarist Paul Pigat (Cousin Harley, Jim Byrnes) releasing his impressive solo debut – with fiddler Jesse Zubot in his band – on November 14.

On November 20, get into some spirited gypsy jazz in a swing dance with Vancouver quartet Van Django – in an expanded big band line-up.

B.C.'s masters of vocal harmony and bluegrass/Canadiana The Breakmen on November 26.

On November 27, don’t miss a unique celebration of African music and gumboot dancing with an African Christmas theme from Zimbabwe's Black Umfolosi.

Acoustic blues comes back to the Rogue on December 4, when Guy Davis makes a welcome return.

All these shows take place at St. James Hall, 3214 West 10th Avenue. Tickets and more information can be found on www.roguefolk.bc.ca.
