Celebrating the First Year Anniversary of the Athenry Irish Band

THE ATHENRY BAND with Kathy and Martin King: Bernadette O'Hara, John Laird, John Pye (president White Rock Irish Club), Mary Fynes, Ray Fynes, Donna Pye and Dermot McNulty.

WHITE ROCK - Kathy and Martin King's annual garden party on August 15 was also the occasion to celebrate the first anniversary of White Rock's Athenry Irish band.

The band was named when members of the King family, visiting from their home in Athenry, Co. Galway last year, brought Fields of Athenry t-shirts which became the band uniform.

Close to 100 friends attended the garden party, including members of the White Rock Irish Club and the Elks Lodge 431.

Several party-goers joined the band to sing their party pieces, as others danced their hearts out on the lawn.

The Pride of Erin Accordion Band with Ina Manser, Joe and Margaret Paterson also added to the entertainment.

The talent among the White Rock Irish is exceptional. There was a great spread of food, including Mary McNulty's famous brown bread. This party went on into the wee hours of the morning, finishing with a small group around a bonfire.

The Athenry band was formed just over a year ago by current White Rock Irish Club president John Pye and his wife Donna.

Other band members include Bernadette O'Hara, John Laird, Mary Fynes and Ray Fynes. Kathy King's brother Derm joins in on bass guitar when he can.

The band provides great entertainment for the club every first and third Wednesday of the month from September to June at the Elks Hall in White Rock. The Elks Lodge very generously provides the venue. Pride of Erin play every second and fourth Wednesday.

Starting on September 2, Athenry will return from summer break with their music, playing Irish songs, Sixties showband hits, rock and roll, and a little of everything.

The White Rock Irish Club is very proud of their musical groups. They play for all the big events at the club. They have also played at the European Festival in Burnaby and several festivals in White Rock.

Everyone is invited to join the fun any Wednesday from 4-6 PM at the Elks Hall in White Rock. For more information, call John Pye at (604) 542-0734 or Kathy King at (604) 536-7723.
