During the month of June the popular Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir will be on a performance tour of Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria.
The Choir, with Music Director Jonathan Quick and Accompanist David Buchan, will leave Vancouver for Berlin on June 9. Professional soprano Jennifer Driscoll-Holmes will also travel with the Choir.
The Choir's first concert will be in Berlin's Hochmeisterkirche on June 12, joined by a local mixed choir. The following day the VWMC will perform at Annenkirche in Dresden, sharing the stage with the famous 140-voice Sashsischer Bergsteigerchoir Curt Schlosser, a male choir formed in 1927 by local mountain climbers.
The VWMC will be in Prague on June 16 at the Concert Hall of St. Simon and St. Juda, a Seventeenth Century church where composers Mozart and Haydn once played its magnificent pipe organ. The concert will also feature the Prague Lady Teachers Choir.
The Choir's first concert in Austria will be on the afternoon of June 19 at the beautiful Salzburg Cathedral, where Mozart was once court composer.
The Archbishop of Salzburg has granted the Choir the rare opportunity to sing in the Cathedral. That evening the Choir will sing in the Parish Church in the alpine resort town of Abtenau, just south of Salzburg.
The tour ends with a joint concert with a 35-member male choir in the Concert Hall Stadtsaal in Ybbs/Donau, a city on the banks of the River Danube.
This will be a benefit concert for children of Chernobyl who return to the Danube city annually for medical attention and rest and recreation.
Following a couple of days sampling the delights of the historic city of Vienna the choir returns to Vancouver on June 23.
The Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir will doubtless be worthy Canadian musical ambassadors to these countries, all of which have historically rich musical traditions. Lower Mainland fans can sample the Choir's tour repertoire at a Farewell Concert on May 23 at Ryerson United Church, 2195 West 45th Avenue, Vancouver.
