Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir Welcomes Spring With Concert Series

VANCOUVER - A performance on St. David's Day (March 1) at St. David's United Church in West Vancouver marks the start of the Vancouver Welsh Men's Choir Spring Concert Series.

The concert will feature traditional Welsh hymns, sung in English and Welsh, as well as folk songs, opera choruses and show tunes. It will be held at 8 PM.

Concerts in the Maple Ridge Arts Centre on March 20 featuring the UBC Opera Ensemble; St. Patrick's Church with St. Patrick's Regional Secondary Chamber Choir in Vancouver on April 26; and Ryerson United in Vancouver will complete the series.

The Choir is busy perfecting new repertoire for their next major performance tour.

Beginning June 9, the VWMC will travel to Berlin with concerts in that city as well as Dresden, where they will be joined by local choirs.

They will then board buses for the Czech Republic and an appearance in the Concert Hall of St. Simon and Juda in Prague. This magnificent church dates from the Seventeenth Century. Its magnificent pipe organ has been used by many famous composers including Mozart and Haydn.

From Prague the Choir will travel to Salzburg, Austria. The Archbishop of Salzburg has granted the Choir the rare opportunity to sing in Salzburg Cathedral.

As court composer from 1773-1777, Mozart composed many sacred works for the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg.

The church is one of the most impressive examples of early baroque architecture north of the Alps.

There has been a cathedral on the site since the Eighth Century. However, the current building was begun in the Seventeenth Century after the original was destroyed by fire.

The tour concludes with two concerts in smaller communities - Abtenau near Salzburg and Gros Siegharts outside Vienna, with the group returning to Vancouver on June 23.

Two-thirds of the Choir plan to make the trip accompanied by Music Director, Jonathan Quick, and Accompanist, David Buchan. Professional soprano Jennifer Driscoll-Holmes will also travel with the choir.
