Martin Hayes Awarded Traditional Musician of the Year

MARTIN HAYES has been All-Ireland fiddle champion six times.

ENNIS, County Clare - Martin Hayes has secured the top accolade of Traditional Musician of the Year in the 2008 TG4 Gradam Ceoil Awards, the most prestigious awards of the traditional music world.

Commenting on the announcement in Ennis, the east Clare native who now resides in Seattle, said he was delighted to be honoured this year. "To me, it's recognition from inside the world of the music itself, which I haven't had in a long time," he said.

Hayes has been All-Ireland fiddle champion six times. The Young Traditional Musician of the Year went to Ballybofey, County Donegal native Martin Tourish; Iarla O Lionaird is the Traditional Singer of the Year; Composer of the Year went to Peadar O Riada; Musicians' Award to Harry Bradshaw and the lifetime Achievement Award to sean-nos dance teachers, Joe and Siobhan O'Donovan. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on March 21 in the INEC, Killarney.
