CEOL AGUS CRAIC Great Music Can Chase Away the Rainy Day Blues!

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! With the early arrival of the rainy season, it's definitely time to feed the soul with an ample helping of sweet music.

Concert listings: I hope you were wise enough to catch the terrific concert by Dervish last month at Capilano College.
• Scottish-Canadian singer-songwriter David Francey makes a welcome return to Cap College on October 28
• Newfoundland party band Great Big Sea do a couple of casino gigs November 2 at the Boulevard Casino in Coquitlam November 2 and the River Rock in Richmond November 3
• Fiddler Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas play Cap College on November 3
• Scottish guitar whiz Tony McManus, ace fiddler April Verch and B.C. master musician Doug Cox hit St. James Hall on November 10
• The amazing Irish-American duo Liz Carroll & John Doyle return to St. James on November 18
• Looking into the new year, Karan Casey is back with a date at Cap College on February 23, Scotland's Malinky come to town for the first time on March 2 and Oysterband are at St. James, April 26.

Local motion: The next Scottish Ceilidh of the season is October 26 at the Scottish Cultural Centre with a class at 7 PM, and dancing at 8 PM. You don't need a partner and beginners are very welcome

• The Irish Heather has an Irish traditional session on Thursday nights and trad Ballyhooley has started a regular gig there every Tuesday evening from 7:30 PM
• There's now a Friday night session at the Celtic Traditions store starting at 8 PM. Bring your instruments and bring your songs.

Recording news: The new release from superb Irish group Dervish, Travelling Show, is fabulous and features a killer cover of the old Cher song Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves
• In The Moment by Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas on Culburnie Records has more great tunes on fiddle and cello with guest appearances by fiddler/pianist Hanneke Cassel and piper Eric Rigler
• Four on the Floor is the latest disc from one of Scotland's best, The Old Blind Dogs
• River So Wide is the newest CD by local Celtic combo Tiller's Folly.
