CEOL AGUS CRAIC Time to Take it Outside!

By ERIN MULLAN Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! Summer's here and the time is right for partying in the parks at some of our great outdoor festivals of course!

Festival news:
• The Harrison Festival of the Arts has the great Cape Breton group Beolach on July 15 at the Memorial Hall and Quebec's Les Tireux de Roches at the plaza on the beach also on the 15th. www.harrisonfestival.com
• This year the Vancouver Folk Music Festival celebrates its 30th anniversary with acts including the amazing Irish-American fiddler Liz Carroll accompanied by guitarist John Doyle, Scottish singer Dougie MacLean, Welsh singer Martyn Joseph and Scottish-Canadian singer David Francey. There'll be a whole lot of singing going on at Jericho Beach park from July 13-15-don't miss it! www.thefestival.bc.ca
• The Mission Folk Music Festival runs from July 27-29 with Battlefield Band, The Bills, David Francey, Scottish duo Angus Lyon & Ruaridh Campbell and The McDades providing the Celtic content. www.missionfolkmusicfestival.ca
• The Calgary Folk Music Festival runs July 26-29 with Battlefield Band, Cowboy Celtic, Great Big Sea and Beolach in the mix.

• Bill Bourne brings his new band to St. James Hall on July 12
• English guitar maestro Martin Simpson returns August 3 to St. James
• Gráda may be coming to Vancouver on August 21
• Superb Irish group Dervish plays Capilano College September 21

to-be-confirmed for September 12 or 13, Eliza Carthy & Aidan Curran September 22, Laura Cortese October 7.

Local motion:
• The summer Scottish Country "Dancing in the Park" runs Monday evenings (weather permitting). The dancing moves for this season to Queen Elizabeth Park and will be back in Stanley Park in the summer of 2008

• Sweet Warrior is the most recent offering from the prolific guitarist Richard Thompson out on Shout Factory
• There's a couple of new releases on Compass Records: Lau, a great new Scottish act featuring Kris Drever (guitar and vocal), Martin Green (piano accordion) and Aidan O'Rourke (fiddle), have their debut disc out called Lightweights & Gentlemen and the latest from The Tannahill Weavers entitled Live and in Session
• The most recent album from folkie veterans Oysterband is Meet You There on the Westpark label.
