Summer is Festival Music Season

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! Our sweet brief summer looms and with it the festival season. There's heaps of great music to be enjoyed in the great outdoors.

Festival preview: What follows is Celtic content for some of the summer festivals. Get out there and get happy • The Harrison Festival of the Arts goes from July 7-15 and has Cape Breton's Beolach and Quebec's Les Tireux de Roches. www.harrisonfestival.com
• Scottish singer Dougie MacLean returns to B.C. this summer to play Island Musicfest and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival in July
• Also at the Vancouver folk fest (July 13-15) is brilliant fiddler Liz Carroll with Irish guitarist John Doyle. www.thefestival.bc.ca
• At the Mission Folk Music Festival (July 27-29) you'll find Battlefield Band, The Bills, David Francey, Scottish accordion/pipe duo Angus Lyon & Ruaridh Campbell and recent Juno winners The McDades. www.missionfolkmusicfestival.ca
• The Calgary Folk Music Festival runs July 26-29 and has the Battlefield Band, Cowboy Celtic, Great Big Sea and Beolach

Concert listings: Whiskey Hollow Bound is a feast of six B.C. string bands on June 17 at St. James, featuring The Breakmen, Plough, Mountain Bluebirds, Dyad, Viper Central and Redgrass
• Bill Bourne brings his new band to St. James on July 12
• English guitar master Martin Simpson returns in August
• Grαda may be coming to Vancouver on August 21
• Superb Irish group Dervish starts the next Folk & Roots Series at Capilano College in September
• Cap College is also the venue for Scots fiddle ace Alasdair Fraser with cellist Natalie Haas on November 3.

Local motion: The summer Scottish Country "Dancing in the Park" runs Monday evenings (weather permitting) starting June 18. The dancing moves for this season to Queen Elizabeth Park and will be back in Stanley Park in the summer of 2008

Recording news: Irish band Grαda have just released their third CD, Cloudy Day Navigation, on Compass Records
• Also new on Compass is the second outing by Ireland's Beoga: Mischief featuring new addition Niamh Dunne on fiddle and vocals
• Irish flute player Nuala Kennedy has a fine new disc named for her new band The New Shoes on Scotland's Greentrax label
• Scotland's Julie Fowlis, who was here with Dochas a couple of years back, has released her second Cuilidh features her fiance Ιamon Doorley of Danu.
