Brian Boru Film Planned Next Year

DUBLIN - Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio could be starring as Brian Boru in a movie to be filmed in Ireland next year.

The star, who received an Oscar nomination for his role in Blood Diamond, is in talks with Irish film-makers who plan to bring the story of the high king to the silver screen. Corkman Mark Mahon is planning to make the EU30 million epic in west Cork and Kerry and has already signed up former soccer star Vinnie Jones. It is planned that filming will begin in March next year and will include a number of major battle scenes.

Brian Boru was born Brian Mac Cennetig in around 941 and by 1002 had become the High King of Ireland after a series of bloody battles.

He became known as Brian of the Tributes or Brian Boru by collecting tributes from minor rulers and funding the restoration of monasteries and libraries destroyed during the Viking invasions. Brian died during the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 and was buried in Faughert in Dundalk.
