Popular Choirs Highlight Welsh Society Fall Events

By EIFION WILLIAMS

The Vancouver Welsh Society is currently planning a busy fall schedule of events.

In September, the Society will welcome one of Wales’ best male choirs, Cor Godre’r Aran (Aran Mountain Choir). The choir will be visiting Vancouver following an appearance at the North American Festival of Wales in Portland, Oregon.

Cor Godre’r Aran is based in the village of Llanuwchllyn, near Bala, North Wales, and has toured widely in the UK, North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. The choir has also won numerous national and international awards, including the BBC Radio Cymru competition for male voice choirs.

The Vancouver concert, to be held at Shaughnessy Heights United Church on September 10, will also include young Welsh soprano Heulan Cynfal and a group of three choir members calling themselves The Three Basses, who have gained a wide reputation for their unique performances.

On the weekend of October 29-31 the Welsh Society will hold its annual Welsh weekend, the Vancouver Celebration of Wales. The highlight of the four-day event will be a joint concert by the Vancouver Orpheus Choir and the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir.

The annual Gymanfa Ganu will be held on Sunday afternoon, conducted by popular conductor Eifion Thomas, musical director of the Llanelli Male Choir, who is making a return visit to Vancouver.

Other weekend events will include a Noson Lawen on Thursday evening, the annual dinner on Friday evening, a Dylan Thomas presentation on Saturday and a bilingual church service on Sunday morning.

Information and tickets for these events can be obtained from the Welsh Society’s website www.welshsociety.com.
