OWENS, Kenneth Campbell Richard
25 April 1915 – 24 January 2010
Ken’s family sadly announce that their dear husband and father peacefully passed away at St. Paul’s Hospital on January 24, 2010.
Ken was Phyllis’ treasured husband and best friend of 67 years and the precious father of Lynn Owens-Whalen and her husband, Wilf.
He is also survived by his dear sister Agnes Wicks, brother John Owens (Sheila), nephew Bob Wicks (Chris), cousins David McLean (Brenda), Daphne Powell and Herbert Owen (Pat), nephew Stan Morgan (Darlene), nieces Jessie Dodds, Vikki Liket (Corrie), Suzi Hoadley (Jerry), Shirley Mason (George), Elaine Mallo, great nieces and nephews of whom he was so fond and many wonderful friends.
Ken was predeceased by his parents George and Christina (Campbell) Owens, sister Mary Owens and brother Alexander Owens, brother-in-law Lyle Wicks, sister-in-law Christine Owens, cousins Lois McLean, Chris Connor, John Owen, Margaret Luce, Bill Owen and Eddie Owen, his parents-in-law, Arthur and Ella Morgan, in-laws Ivor and Hilda Neil, Leslie and Beth Morgan, Cyril and Ruth Morgan and Garfield (Gary) and Margaret Morgan and nieces Eileen Snow and Lana Flaman.
Ken grew up in South Vancouver and attended Sir Sanford Fleming school. Putting aside the myriad of illness that he had as a child, he had warm memories of trips to Kitsilano Beach and Third Beach, playing with his siblings on Lanark Street and visits from his cousins from Alberta. As a teenager, Ken discovered Grouse Mountain and found many friends with whom he enjoyed hiking and skiing for many years.
From the time he married Phyllis at West Point Grey United Church in December of 1942, he felt the warmth and friendship of the AOTS, the Couples Club and later the Thursday Lunch Club.
He also rediscovered his Welsh roots having married Phyllis Morgan, and for many years has treasured his membership in the Vancouver Welsh Society.
His talents as a carpenter and handy man were well put to use, not only at home, but also to support the Cambrian Hall, the home of the Welsh Society.
Ken’s family are very grateful for the exceptional and loving care provided to Ken during his illness especially Dr. Joy Russell, Dr. Beverly Jung and also the Rev. Val Taylor for her gentle guidance, love and support.
Ken has left a legacy of strength, loyalty, love, commitment and dignity. As a husband and father, he was simply ‘the best’. He was a gentleman, kind and sweet, with a quiet and gentle manner but an inner strength that was amazing.
A celebration of Ken’s life was held at West Point Grey United Church on February 5. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Thursday Lunch Club for seniors at West Point Grey United Church, 4595 West 8th Avenue, Vancouver or to the Building Fund for the Cambrian Hall c/o the Vancouver Welsh Society, 215 East 17th Avenue, Vancouver.
