White Rock Irish Planning 10th Anniversary Celebration

WHITE ROCK – The White Rock Irish Club started out in the year 2000 as an extension of Comhaltas Coetroiri Eireann (a world-wide group involved in the promotion of Irish traditional music and culture).

Led by Kevin McFadden, they offered Gaelic lessons taught by Kevin, ceili dancing with Brenda McDonnell, and traditional music provided by Harry Murtagh and friends.

After a few years Kevin became ill and sadly passed away – the Gaelic lessons ended and they evolved into the White Rock Irish Club.

Operating out of the White Rock Elks Hall, over the years they have had many social events and activities, including twice hosting a weekend of hurling and football tournaments where their local Vancouver players were competing against teams from as far away as Washington State and Alberta.

Many able presidents and lots of great volunteers have kept the club going throughout the years.

They now have their own in-house band “Athenry” led by their current president, John Pye and they hope to continue for a long time to provide an Irish home to members and friends who enjoy a few Irish songs at the Elks Hall.

Currently they are planning to celebrate their tenth anniversary year with a dinner/dance at the Pacific Inn in White Rock on March 17, with Brian Nicholl providing the music.
