VANCOUVER – In December Michael Viens, organizer of the annual Danny Burns Memorial Feed the Hungry benefit, presented Kimberly Harmsen of the Union Gospel Mission with a cheque for $5,080.
The UGM provides outreach to residents of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside, one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Canada.
Three times a day, 365 days a year, hungry people with nowhere else to turn know they can always go to Union Gospel Mission for a meal.
And four times a year, UGM opens its doors even wider to serve thousands of meals to those in need as they serve community dinners at Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and at their annual summer barbeque.
It’s a time for great home-cooked food, fellowship with friends, and conversations with caring outreach workers who can offer guests a way off the street, out of addiction, and into a brighter future.
Harmsen said the UGM is truly grateful for the donation. She said, “We are thrilled with the support from the annual Feed the Hungry benefit.”
“We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have given through the Danny Burns Memorial over the years – this being the eighth annual. Even before the benefit, Danny was active in supporting UGM for many years prior to that.”
