 PHIL MOORE |
By JOHN O’FLYNN
Joseph Louis Philippe Moore was born in St. Henedine, Quebec, July 20, 1929. He was one of 18 brothers and sisters. In his late teens, Phil left home to work in logging camps. He traveled across parts of Canada on tops of trains and eventually reached B.C.
Phil worked on Minstrel and Harbledown Islands, Juskatla and Moresby Island in the Queen Charlottes. In 1953 he did a short stint undercover for the San Diego Police.
It was through brothers Tom and John Flynn that Phil met his future wife, Norah. On December 27, 1958, at Saint Patrick’s Parish, they married and started a family of six children (Cecilia, Philippe, Thomas, Michael, Pierre and Monica.)
Phil worked in various professions from hairdressing to construction. He spent time teaching his children how to skate and play baseball. He was fanatical about good boxing.
Phil and Norah celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in the chapel of Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. Rising from his hospital bed Phil walked down to the chapel to renew his vows.
A few weeks before he died on November 28, Phil experienced a warmth go through his body as Fr. Vincent Hawkswell administered the Sacrament of the Sick and gave him Holy Communion.
His face glowing, he said, “When I get to heaven, ... I am going to have a big talk with God, and I will ask Him to give you all a sign...I will pray for everyone in heaven, and for all the problems in the world.”
