A championship chuckwagon racer, Gregory “Greg” Rufus Smith, surrounded by his loving family, passed away at Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, on August 2, 2009, following a tragic chuckwagon accident in Vermillion, Alberta. Greg was from Coleville, Saskatchewan and at age 16, he followed in his father’s footsteps and started racing chariots, moving onto chuckwagons at age 18. Greg loved raising their own colts and training horses and had a natural ability with horses. He was well respected for his sportsmanship and competitiveness in the many associations he raced with over the years. Greg loved racing and treasured the many friendships and memories made on the racing circuit. This past spring, he purchased two of his own horses Ruby and Gem to add to the racing team. Greg was an easy going guy who enjoyed meeting people and especially enjoyed life to the fullest and faced whatever he had to do as he was no quitter. He was very dedicated to his family and was always there to help them with whatever or whomever needed his helping hand. Greg was an avid curler participating in community leagues and many bonspiels in the area. He was also very dedicated to his community and volunteered with the fire department.
Predeceased in 2006, by his loving sister Beth Smith, Greg will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his parents, Don “Smitty” and Kay Smith of Coleville, Saskatchewan. Siblings: Donna (Brian) Neumeier; Susan (Warren) Lozensky; Lorraine Holmes; Michael (Daria) Smith; Tracey Smith; and numerous dear nieces and nephews. May God rest his soul. [FOOTNOTE: Greg’s grandparents were originally from the Gatineau area of western Quebec.
