Annual Lecture at SFU Centre for Scottish Studies
VANCOUVER - The St. Andrews and Caledonian Society's annual lecture hosted by Simon Fraser University's Centre for Scottish Studies will be held on December 2 at 8 PM.
Dr. Gary West, Head of the Department of Celtic and Scottish Studies with the University of Edinburgh will deliver this year's annual St. Andrews and Caledonian Society lecture.
His talk, entitled 'Pipers without Kilts: Survival and Revival in the Scottish Lowland Bagpipe Tradition', explores a much understudied aspect of Scottish piping.
West learned his piping with the much-acclaimed Vale of Atholl pipe band with whom he played for 18 years.
He joined the band Ceol Beg in 1988, and was a founding member of the Scottish 'super group' Clan Alba in 1991.
He is in regular demand as a recording session player and has performed on over 20 CDs. Gary also presents BBC Radio Scotland's weekly specialist piping programme, Pipeline.
For more information about the lecture, or to reserve a seat, e-mail Dr. Leith Davis at leith@sfu.ca or call (778) 782-4833.
