Vancouver Manx Society Established 1908
VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Manx Society was established in 1908 by a group of people who had emigrated from the Isle of Man and wanted, as the Manx poet T.E. Brown stated, "to preserve whate'er is left to us of ancient heritage."
The island is situated in the northern area of the Irish Sea, close to Scotland, England and Ireland.
It is an internally self governing dependent of the British Crown, yet it is not part of the United Kingdom. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is known as the Lord of Mann.
Celtic and Viking culture played a huge part in the history of the island and its parliament, known as Tynwald was established by the Vikings in the Eighth Century. It is the longest continuous form of government in the world.
Having celebrated its Centennial year in 2008 the Society's aim is to continue to bring those of Manx descent together, to provide a place where old and young are able to meet and discover areas of interest, and to foster a continued interest in our beautiful island and its heritage.
The Society welcomes new members of Manx descent and those interested in Manx affairs. Their next get-together is on October 24 at Faith Lutheran Church, 1005 Kensington Avenue, Burnaby. Door opens at 4:30 PM. Dinner at 5:30 PM.
