Welsh Weekend will celebrate 80th birthday of the Cambrian Hall

THE CAMBRIAN is located on East 17th Avenue near Main Street. It was built in 1929.

VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Welsh Society is currently busy planning for the 80th Anniversary Welsh Weekend to be held November 6-8. The anniversary will commemorate the building of the Cambrian Hall in 1929.

The traditional Noson Lawen, an evening of amateur entertainment, will kick off the celebrations on the evening of November 6. An anniversary dinner will be held at the Cambrian Hall on November 7, followed the next day by the annual Gymanfa Ganu.

The Society has once more been fortunate to engage Eifion Thomas, musical director of the Llanelli Male Voice Choir, to conduct the Gymanfa Ganu. Eifion, who is also an accomplished tenor soloist, is familiar to Vancouver audiences from several previous visits and his contribution to the Welsh Weekend is eagerly anticipated.

Another guest at the weekend activities will be young Welsh soprano and harpist Joy Cornock. She is a regular soloist in recitals and concerts around the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany and Ireland and has won numerous prestigious awards.

More details on the November events will appear in next month's issue of The Celtic Connection. Meanwhile, regular Welsh Society activities continue at the Cambrian Hall.

On September 26 there will be a Quiz Night in the Red Dragon lounge, at which members and guests are invited to test their knowledge of trivia in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Further information on these and other Welsh Society events can be obtained from the Society's website www.welshsociety.com.
