St. Vincent de Paul Society Annual Volunteer Barbeque

SHEILA COUTU with Father Vincent Hawkswell and Tom O'Flynn at the annual St. Vincent de Paul barbeque.

By CATHOLINE BUTLER

VANCOUVER - The St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers are a special dedicated group of men and women who volunteer their time, energy and resources to help feed the homeless and less fortunate in our society.

This summer volunteers gathered at the home of Thomas (Tom) O'Flynn, president of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul British Columbia and Yukon Regional Council, for their annual barbeque.

Tom's back garden was resplendent with hanging baskets of flowers and set up with tables, chairs, umbrellas, and a large tent for the event. The weather co-operated with some lovely sunshine and the umbrellas were very welcome.

When this friendly and lively group get together there's always a lot of fun and laughter. Everyone pitched in to help volunteer Ivan Douglas, the hard-working barbeque chef, to serve-up his specialty of marinated steaks and salmon.

Each year, past-president Sheila Coutu provides homemade hand-picked berry pies... they are delicious with ice-cream!

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is still very much in need of more volunteers. If you have any time to spare throughout the week....be it a day or even a couple of hours, they would welcome your help. For more information, call (604) 873-1003, (604) 873-1065, or the help line at (604) 873-2297 and leave a message for Sheila.
