VANCOUVER - More than 4,000 competitors are expected to make their way to Belfast this month to participate in the World Championships of Irish Dance, the 38th since the competition's inception in 1970. Dancers must qualify to compete by winning at regional championships held each fall in cities all over the world.
Among the hopefuls on their way to Ireland are five local competitors from the Stewart School of Irish Dance. This will be the first trip to the World Championships for 11-year old Kaitlin and 12-year old Jefferey Carandang of Richmond.
Also again representing the Stewart School are Melanie Bland of Richmond, Naomi McCullough and Shane Byrne of Maple Ridge. 19 year old Byrne will be making his third appearance at Worlds.
The World Championships of Irish Dance will be held at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast March 23 to 30.
The Stewart School of Irish Dance, led by Magdalene Stewart, TCRG ADCRG, has been a cornerstone of the local Irish dance community for more than 30 years.
The black, green and pink colours of the Stewart school are often seen performing throughout the Lower Mainland at special events and community venues.
