Alan Jones Entertains the Dylan Thomas Circle

TED LANGLEY, Alan Jones, Neville Thomas, founders of the Dylan Thomas Circle are reunited when Alan returned to give his presentation.

By EIFION WILLIAMS

VANCOUVER - The Dylan Thomas Circle welcomed Alan Jones back to the Cambrian Hall on February 22 to give a talk on some of the poet's work.

Alan and his wife Tima left Vancouver five years ago to operate a motel in Princeton and this was the first time Alan had returned for a Circle event. Tima unfortunately had to stay behind to look after the business.

The large audience enjoyed Alan's reading and analysis of three of Dylan's best known poems - Fern Hill, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, and The Conversation of Prayer. The presentation was followed by a spirited discussion. Alan's knowledge and insight into the works of the Welsh poet was greatly appreciated by the audience. His rich voice is resonant of Dylan's own mellifluous reading.

Alan Jones has made a lifelong study of Dylan Thomas' works and wrote a thesis on the poet while a student at Bristol University. His enthusiasm for the poet's words is infectious. The audience also enjoyed two videos, including a reading by a much younger Alan Jones.

The event was organized by Circle Vice-President Neville Thomas who, together with Alan Jones and Ted Langley, were the three founding members of the Dylan Thomas Circle, a fact duly recognized by those present.

At the end of the evening, Welsh Society Secretary Eifion Williams presented Alan Jones with two Welsh international rugby shirts on behalf of the Vancouver Welsh Society, with the names Alan and Tima prominently displayed on the backs of the shirts.
