VANCOUVER
Over 90 women gathered to celebrate Nollaig na mBan (Irish Women's Little Christmas) along with the 10th anniversary of the Irish Women's Network on January 5 at the Renaissance Hotel Vancouver.
The evening was a great success with old friends reconnecting and new friendships made over an excellent meal with wine. This was followed by superb entertainment by John and Marie Cronin of the Killarney Showband.
Guests were then treated to a lesson in ceili dancing by Brenda McDonnell of the McDonnell School of Irish Dance from White Rock.
This year the Irish Women's Network celebrated its 10th anniversary by producing a beautiful calendar called "A Glimpse of Ireland."
This calendar is a fundraiser for two very deserving causes - The Celtic Society of Canada (a benevolent fund which provides assistance to people of Celtic background here in the Lower Mainland).
And, Our Lady's Hospice in Lusaka Zambia (helping patients with AIDS and HIV). This hospital was recommend by former President of Ireland Mary Robinson who personally visited this hospital and felt it was very deserving of support.
The original 800 calendars printed sold out fast and an additional 200 were printed for a total of 1,000 calendars. There are now approximately 20 calendars left.
The money from these calendars is going to two great charities and they are also a great collection of some of your Irish friends in Vancouver. If anyone would like to buy a calendar, call Deirdre O'Ruairc at (604) 538-6765.
The IWN would like to thank all the sponsors and all who supported the calendar.
Next event for the Irish Women's Network is the St. Patrick's Day parade - March 16. For details, call Patricia Jarvis at (604) 275-3611. Over 20 women are needed to walk in the parade.
April 27 is the tenth annual anniversary lunch and Irish Woman of the Year award - details to follow in the March issue of The Celtic Connection or visit: www.irishwomenbc.net for details.
May 31 is the European festival at the Scandinavian Centre in Burnaby.
June 8 is the tenth annual golf tournament and dinner at the Mylora Golf Course in Richmond. For more details, phone Marie Morris (604) 929-1042.
