A Night in November Returns to Vancouver

By LAURIE MacKENZIE
VANCOUVER - The award-winning one-man play, A Night in November, by the Belfast playwright Marie Jones, will be presented starring Irish actor Frank Talbot in the newly opened PAL Vancouver rooftop theatre at 581 Cardero Street (beside the Bayshore Hotel in Coal Harbour), on November 3 at 7:30 PM. A fundraising event for the PAL workshop project. Admission is by a suggested donation of $10.

Receiving rave reviews each time it's been staged, this thought-provoking work explores hatred, racism and intolerance based on the now infamous and explosive 1993 World Cup soccer qualifying final between the Republic of Ireland and North of Ireland teams.

The outcome was simply to determine if the Republic team, who only needed to draw, would advance to the World Cup in New York the following year, with the North of Ireland team, while not in contention, being in a position to keep the Republic team down and out of the final.

The bigotry and hatred displayed throughout the match by both fans and team management alike are still talked about to this day, making this dynamic play, the story of one man's wake-up call to re-examine his life after having attended that match, a timeless and powerful work.
