Annual Feis Hosted by Stewart School of Dance

By CATHOLINE BUTLER
BURNABY - The Stewart School of Irish Dance held their annual Feis at the Bonsor Recreation Centre in Burnaby on June 16 and 17. Over 600 dancers from across North America competed at the event.

AT THE STEWART SCHOOL FEIS: Tom Butler with his granddaughter Angela Logan, who was a former student with the Stewart School. Angela's daughter Kiera is now a student with the Stewart school.

From early morning until late, dancers competed for coveted trophies and prizes. The energy and dedication of the teachers who work to carry on this ancient tradition must be commended. It's wonderful to see such confidence and poise in the boys and girls. You really can see the results of the training in the dancers and I believe it gives them that extra edge of confidence in their daily lives.

In many of the dance schools, you will find parents who have taken dancing lessons from the same teacher where their children are now taking lessons.

The Stewart School is one of the oldest and largest schools of traditional Irish dance in the Pacific Northwest. The school was founded in 1974 by Magdalene Stewart, TCRG, ADCRG. Magdalene was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Many of the dancers at the Stewart School Feis will be going to Ottawa in July to compete in the North American National Irish Dance Championships.
