Calgary Welcomes Tony Griffin With a White Stetson Night Fundraiser

CALGARY - Irish hurling champion Tony Griffin has put his career on hold as he aims to raise EU150,000 by cycling across Canada and Ireland to raise funds for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Irish Cancer Society and Ovarian Cancer Canada.

AT THE WHITE STETSON night in Calgary for Tony Griffin's "Ride for the Cure" are (L-R) Rob, Matt, Ben and Tony at the Irish Cultural Society fundraiser in Calgary.

The County Clare forward and 2006 All-Star decided to put his hurling commitments on hold after the untimely death of his father in December 2005, after a nine-month battle with lung cancer.

He launched his epic 7,000 kilometre cross-Canada "Ride for the Cure" journey from Vancouver on May 2.

On the night prior to his departure, Tony Griffin and his crew attended a fundraiser at The Blarney Stone in Vancouver's Gastown, organized by the Irish Sporting and Social Club. At that event, $5,000 was raised for Tony's cause.

In Calgary a fundraiser was held at the Irish Cultural Centre, where $5,000 was raised to support Tony's "Ride for the Cure." Tony and his crew were treated to some real western hospitality at a white stetson night in Calgary, which included musicians and Irish dancers.
