The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) All-Ireland Finals for football and hurling are played in September.
The Sam Maguire Cup is awarded to the winners of the All-Ireland Senior Football Final and was first presented for the 1928 Final. Kildare, then defending champions, beat Cavan in the game.
The Final winners were presented with the trophy each year up to and including 1987 when Meath beat Cork. A new trophy was awarded for the 1988 Final, as the old one was suffering from the ravages of the passing years. Meath became the first winners of the new trophy, still known as the Sam Maguire Cup.
The Liam McCarthy Cup is awarded to the winners of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final. The Liam McCarthy Cup was first presented for the 1921 Final between Limerick and Dublin, which was not played until March 4, 1923.
Dublin were then champions and holders of the Great Southern Cup, the trophy was then awarded to the All-Ireland Senior Final winners. They lost the 1921 Final to Limerick.
