Top Film Picks from Our Readers

Last month we asked our readers to send in their top picks for either Irish or Scottish films. We received a number of responses and have listed a few below. See if you agree or disagree or would like to suggest others.

If you have any comments or other suggestions, send them by e-mail to: maura@telus.net or fax: (604) 438-8419.

Tony Lawrence of Meluki Books Marketing responded based on his experience with requests from local customers and from attending the B.C. Highland Games.

He suggests the following Scottish favourites: Greyfriars Bobby; Whisky Galore; Braveheart; Trainspotting; Mrs. Brown; Gregory's Girl; Bonnie Prince Charlie; Brigadoon; Maggie (with Paul Douglas); Mary, Queen of Scots (Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson); Thirty Nine Steps (Kenneth More).

He said he also gets requests for Irish films and the following are classic favourites: Ryan's Daughter; Best: A Feature Film on the Life of Football Star George Best. And from Wales: How Green was My Valley.

Gene McDonnell of Kamloops, B.C. replied, "of course there has been many Irish movies of note. Cal was a big hit a few years ago, however in recent times my favourite movie was Everlasting Piece with Billy Connolly who played a very small, but essential part.

"The plot was of two barbers in a mental hospital moonlighting in a second job selling hair pieces. It is all dry humour, trying to sell a hairpiece to the IRA man who was about to shoot them a few minutes prior. Police start stopping cars with bald drivers in the streets of Belfast looking for the IRA. It also features a lovely poem by Van Morrison on the sound track called Coney Island, which is about the County Down coast. This is a very hilarious film - a must see!"
