Dream Maker Studio takes care of the manufacturing along with the audio mastering and printing. As one of Vancouver's premier independent recording studios, Dream Maker Studio specializes in music recording and production, with an emphasis on a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. They offer complete creative and production services to both professionals and beginners.
I recently dropped into Dream Maker Studio to speak with John Lynch and David Jewer, the two men behind the sound board who make it all happen.
"I'm the guy that sits behind the board," said David Jewer. "Producing is a lot more extensive than engineering. Engineering is basically pushing the buttons. Producing is assisting the musicians with the recording.
"I'm the one who suggests, 'well, why don't you try this guitar part here, or why don't you take out this vocal or change this line.' It helps the musicians get a better result.
Jewer is also the owner of Spin Digital Media which manufactures the CDs, and this allows Dream Maker Studio to offer the musician the whole package.
Speaking about the time and cost to make a CD, Jewer said, "that's difficult to nail down. It all depends on the musician and how prepared they are and how much they require, but we try to work within people's budgets.
"Quality is also a factor. Sometimes, people need a quick fast demo and we can do that for them. Others want a complete record. The average time to record a record would take about eight to 10 hours, approximately two to three weeks."
Many Celtic Connection readers know John Lynch or have seen him perform at the Blarney Stone in Gastown with the famous Killarney which has been the house band there for the past 20 years and counting.
Dream Maker Studio is located at John Lynch's house and takes up his entire basement. When you walk into the studio, it's like walking into another world. The studio consists of the main control room, the isolation room for vocals and a live room, where everything is done live off the floor.
Basically there are four sections to the studio. It all looks very professional and as John said, "yes, it cost a few bob alright, it's really a major black hole...it's a money pit. But it's something that I've always wanted to do and it's nice to be able to help out other kids. My favourite part of the whole business is seeing people come in and make an album."
John Lynch and John Knill started Dream Maker Studio five years ago to fulfill their dream of a recording studio. Tragically, while on holiday in Thailand, John Knill and his wife Jackie were swept away in the violent tsunami that hit South East Asia.
Understandably, John Lynch and all the people who knew the very popular couple were devastated.
Speaking about this very sad time, John said, "I'll never move past the tsunami. I'll always remember John and Jackie but I know that they would want me to move on.
"David had worked with John Knill and myself and we always went to David to get our CDs done. So after John passed away, David phoned me and said that he would like to work with me.
"We've been together ever since and now we have the studio up and running and doing music, which is what we always dreamed of doing. David is an excellent engineer who studied sound engineering in Montreal."
John Lynch was born in Killarney, County Kerry in Ireland and, of course, that's where the name of the group Killarney comes from.
Lynch has been involved with music all his life. "From an early age, I went from a piano to a guitar because it was easier to transport a guitar. I've played with several different groups.

"I was in a three-piece rock group in Ireland for about five years. We toured with the likes of Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher. After that the scene spiraled downward and then the showband scene was huge, so we put together a group called The Swinging Jarveys and toured Ireland.
"When we came over to Vancouver in 1974 we liked what we saw and have been here ever since. We changed the name to Killarney because we felt that people here wouldn't know what a jarvey is. In Ireland, he's the driver of a jaunting car. We toured across Canada for 12 years, then we came off the road and the rest is history."
John Lynch's roots are first and foremost pop rock but his next favourite is Irish music. Killarney is his favourite band in the whole wide world and no wonder, as they have been like family for the past 20 years.
For all those people who keep wondering if Killarney will ever record an album....the answer is yes. They are working on one now at Dream Maker Studio. Stay tuned to The Celtic Connection for their release date.
