Oscar's Art Books is 17 Years Old
and Still Going Strong
VANCOUVER - Oscar's Art Book Store in Vancouver, celebrates 17 years and going strong on March 17. Is it Irish luck? Sean O'Flynn, the founder of Oscar's Art Book admits, "there is some luck of the Irish involved."
Dublin-born, Sean O'Flynn opened Oscar's Art Book store on Granville at Broadway in 1990 in the very same spot where Chapters sits today. "I was on a month-to-month lease when Oscar's first opened," says Sean. "Then the manager of the shoe store on Broadway asked me to take over his lease, and the rest is history as they say."
In the Nineties, independent book stores were surprises when big box stores like Chapters and Indigo Books started opening in Canada. Oscar's had one open directly across the street. Like many independent book stores, Oscar's struggled and fought to transform into the Oscar's everyone knows and loves today.
Irish luck? More like good old-fashioned hard work. For a few years of the business, O'Flynn worked seven days a week. The only day the store was closed was Christmas day. "In 1999, I hired two managers who have helped me build Oscar's into two store locations and a website."
On March 16-18, Oscar's celebrates 17 successful years of independent book store business with great promotion and incredible book values. Drop in and help celebrate. The browsing is free!
