CEOL AGUS CRAIC Fall back into Autumnal Music!

Ceol binn a bhaint as an saol! As another of our fleeting sweet summers passes, the autumn brings a variety of indoor musical pursuits as compensation.

Concert listings:
• The highlight of the fall season comes on September 21 when the sublime Irish group Dervish returns to Capilano College
• There's a "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day Bash" at Richard's on Richards September 16 featuring The Paperboys and guest Miles Hunter from The Wonder Stuff, Shona Le Mottee and MC Tim Readman. Proceeds to benefit the CelticFest Vancouver Society
• Speaking of CeltFest, congrats to Time Readman who will take the festival from strength-to-strength as its new artistic director
• Czech bluegrass outfit Druha Trava combine bluegrass and Celtic music. See them at St. James Hall on September 26
• English folk diva Eliza Carthy and Victoria guitarist / singer Aidan Curran hit St. James on September 22
• There's a bunch of BC bluegrass/Old-Time/Celtic bands coming to the Rogue Folk Club at St. James, with Jenny Lester & Hungry Hill on September 28, Outlaw Social - featuring Kendel Carson on fiddle October 5 and Victoria trio The Gruff with Boston fiddler / singer Laura Cortese on October 7
• Fiddler Alasdair Fraser and cellist Natalie Haas come to Cap College on Nov 3
• Scottish guitar ace Tony McManus, with fiddler April Verch and B.C. master musician Doug Cox play St. James on November 10
• Killer Irish duo Liz Carroll & John Doyle return on November 18 to St. James.

Local motion:
• The first Scottish Ceilidh of the season is September 28 at the Scottish Cultural Centre with a class at 7 pm, and dancing at 8 pm

• The Wolf and Hound has ended the traditional session on Monday nights but the Wednesday session continues
• The Irish Heather has an Irish traditional session on Thursday nights • What's billed as a "new left coast resource for folk music" can be found at: www.vancouverfolk.com.

• Dervish have a new CD on the way: Travelling Show
• Athena Tergis, a young American fiddler living in Galway, has an album out on Compass Records called A Letter Home
• Sound Neighbours: Contemporary Music in Northern Ireland is a fine compilation of music from the North of Ireland on the Smithsonian Folkways label
• There's a new solo effort by Kila's pipe Eoin Dillon, The Third Twin on Kila records
• James Keelaghan & Oscar Lopez have a new collaborative CD out entitled ¿Buddy Where you Been?
