He seeks to attract busy adults by scheduling weekday evening, and Saturday morning classes. He uses a modern textbook with audio CDs and emphasizes pronunciation and grammar for first time learners of the language.
Maher discovered a need among second and third generation Irish, as well as among hibernophiles, to become acquainted with the Irish language. However, the number of people interested in learning the Irish language at any given time is small.
Maher attended an Irish immersion school in Dublin and spent his summers living with Irish-speaking families in the Gaeltacht (Irish-as-a-first-language area).
With a thorough grounding in Latin throughout his school years, Maher later acquired a basic knowledge of French, Spanish, and Italian. He is a life-long devotee of Esperanto as an auxiliary universal language.
His love of languages gave him the idea of opening a language school. Since he had previously operated a travel trade school with his wife, in Vancouver, B.C., he knew the fundamentals of operating a school for adult education.
The Irish Language School is a precursor to something larger on Seattle's Eastside. Irish will continue to be a core subject and who knows what other subjects may follow as the bugs are eliminated from the current model.
Maher may be contacted by e-mail at usacademy@gmail.com or by telephone within North America at 1-800-836-8285.
